Soldier of the Legion was a Finalist for the 2002 ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award in two categories: Science Fiction (book) and Audio Fiction (audiobook).

Soldier of the Legion (book) was a Finalist for the 2003 Benjamin Franklin Award in the “Popular Fiction” category.

The story: A rough truce divides the known galaxy between the System (the despotic slave empire that rules the inner systems) and the Confederation of Free Worlds. The ConFree is defended by the Legion. Beta Three, call sign “Thinker,” like so many young fools before him, joined the Legion after the love of his life walked out. Fresh from the boot camp called Planet Hell, Thinker’s unit is called to defend a remote ConFree world from a mysterious System incursion. The Legion doesn’t negotiate with slavers, even if it means another costly war.

Thinker and the rest of the fearless Legion will soon discover that giant exosegs, slavers and systies are just the beginning. Once before, the Legion faced the godlike, utterly alien and evil Amnis, and drove them back at the cost of billions of lives. The future of humanity – all humanity, even the corrupt and decaying system empire – will soon be in the hands of soldiers of the Legion. Can the Legion defend the ConFree from the evil System slavers?

The story: One of the few survivors of a League sneak attack on his poor and miserable homeworld of Carescria, Wilf Brim sets out to settle the score. Were it not for the attrition from the war that followed, Wilf would never have escaped his lower class status and been accepted into the Academy. Now, freshly graduated, young Sublieutenant Wilf Ansor Brim, Imperial Fleet, begins his first assignment, Helmsman of the I.F.S. Truculent.

BILL BALDWIN is author of The Helmsman (1985/2003), Galactic Convoy (1987/2003), The Trophy (1990/2007), The Mercenaries (1991), The Defenders (1992), The Siege (1994), Canby’s Legion (1995), and The Defiance (October 1996), all science fiction novels of the Space Opera genre, originally published by Warner-Aspect.

Baldwin earned a B.A. in Journalism in 1959 and a Master of Letters in 1960. He spent the next three years as a Lieutenant at the U.S. Air Force Missile Test Center, Foreign Technology Division, Cape Canaveral, Florida, supporting Project Mercury as Chief of the Reports Division. In July 1963, he became a contractor for the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, Florida Operations, where he contributed to as well as managed the writing group handling Astronaut public relations and technical presentations throughout the Gemini and early Apollo programs.

At the Cape, Bill was intrigued by the burgeoning computer technology associated with spacecraft operations, and in 1965 moved north to work as a Senior (lead) Presentations Writer for Burroughs Corporation (now UNISYS). In the Defense and Space Division of Burroughs, he began a second career as a computer programmer. After an additional ten years in Advanced Software Technology with Xerox Corporation, he partially retired from the business world, but still spends much of his time staring into a CRT.

Bill is a hopeless devotee of old-fashioned, nuts-and-bolts Space Opera, a life member of SFWA (Science-fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Inc.), and a lover of classic mahogany Chris-Craft runabouts.

In his second adventure, Wilf Brim, the young Helmsman, faces the enemy with only a thin sheet of hullmetal separating him from the devastation of disruptor fire, and finds out what it takes to be a real hero of war aboard the Defiant.

Helmsman Wilf Brim has been assigned to the maiden voyage of I.F.S. Defiant, the first in a new class of warships built to protect Imperial convoys from the ravaging League of Dark Stars. From deepest space to the seas of a primitive world, to the desolate ruins of ancient space forts, Wilf’s job is to battle savage raider hordes – even as he dares to fight for the forbidden love of beautiful Princess Margot Efer’wyck.

Then Brim discovers that the raiders possess a sinister “bender” device that renders ships invisible, and that a vast, undetectable Leaguer armada is bearing toward the Imperial worlds of Haelic Run. Wilf and his comrades must find and unlock lost, secret knowledge to defeat the League’s mysterious weapons and superior numbers – or vital supplies, the war, and Princess Margot will be doomed.

Produced in 1995, this was one of the first downloadable audiobooks on the web.

The story: Alien battle fleets converge on Earth and a desperate war results. Technology and intrigue blend to form a graphic study of politics, morality, and the brutality of total war. A bitter, hard-fought confrontation is under way that ranges from the depths of interstellar space, to a nuclear Battle of the Atlantic, to savage assassinations and Machiavellian usurpations of power and control.
